Websites for Words

Web Design for Wordsmiths

Traditionally, you have two options to get your own website: Either you hire a web design firm, which costs upwards of $2,000. Or you do it yourself, often with questionable results. I am offering a third option:

You provide the copy and the artwork.

After all, writing is what you do best!

I do the rest.

You sit back and relax.

Are you

  • lost when it comes to computers?
  • clueless about how to register a domain name? (What's a domain name?)
  • mystified about the inner workings of websites, let alone WordPress? (Word what?)
  • at a loss when it comes to cybersecurity?
  • utterly discombobulated by the multitude of website hosting companies who claim they are the "best"?

If any or all of the above apply, don't worry, that's where I come in. You write, I take care of the technical and graphical implementation. Yes, it's that simple!

Further, I'm located in the US, and as an ATA-certified translator I am bound by ATA's Code of Ethics and Professional Practice in interactions with all my clients, regardless of whether I'm offering language services or something else. I'm not going to leave you hanging with a half-finished website or worse.

Thank you thank you thank you! Definitely want to tweak verbiage and probably some of the photos eventually. But I really like the look and feel much better than before. I love how you added your creative genius to it. Thanks Carola!

Ted Performance Mindset Coaching

Ted Performance LLC offers mental performance training and mindset coaching for individuals and teams. As you can see from the before pictures, although Ted’s website featured a great color scheme, the design was somewhat cluttered. The site had apparently also been hacked. I wiped the site clean, starting with a fresh WordPress database, but saving his graphics and text. I then redesigned the entire layout for easier navigation both on desktop and mobile devices. Finally, I installed security and backup plugins to avoid future cybersecurity incidents.

  • Client: Ted Performance LLC
  • Features: Security features to avoid cybersecurity breaches, clean redesign for easy navigation on desktops and mobile devices.
  • Completed: March 2023

    CFB Scientific Translations LLC

I redesigned the website for my translation business, CFB Scientific Translations LLC, in 2021 based on a responsive WordPress design. The site is available in two languages, with a language switcher facilitated by the plug-in Polylang. The site features a web shop based on WooCommerce, where people can order fixed-price translations of official documents instantly and pay via any credit or debit card facilitated by Stripe. Finally, it features a bilingual blog.

    • Client: Self/CFB Scientific Translations LLC
    • Features: Bilingual English and German with language switcher based on Polylang, WooCommerce web shop including Stripe gateway, bilingual blog
    • Completed: 2021

      Northern California Translators Association

I have been on the Board of Directors of the Northern California Translators Association (NCTA) as webmaster since 2017. In this capacity, I am not only responsible for maintaining the website and the accompanying online journal, Translorial, but also the entire membership database and all membership profiles, which are also housed within WordPress.

In 2022, I gave the site a much-needed facelift and am currently working on improving the membership database itself. For the new design, I used the existing NCTA color scheme which was developed by an earlier Board of Directors in the mid-2000s.

      • Client: Northern California Translators Association (as webmaster volunteer on Board of Directors)
      • Features: Membership database and profiles, search functionality for profiles, members-only pages behind login, membership administration, events calendar, event RSVP and event tickets
      • Completed: 2022

        Meet CFB Scientific Translations LLC

CFB Scientific Translations LLC provides translation and web design services. CFB Scientific Translations is owned and operated by single member Carola F Berger, PhD, CT.

Hello, my name is Carola F Berger. I hold a PhD in physics and am currently doing business as CFB Scientific Translations LLC, where I offer patent and other translation services between German and English. Now, how did I go from physicist translator to offering website design services for fellow language professionals and other wordsmiths? Read on.

Did you know that the World Wide Web was invented at a physics institution (CERN)? Therefore, it was only natural that my physics department offered webpage hosting for its students in the early 90s, at a time when the rest of the world still thought WWW meant World Wide Wrestling or Wonderful Wonder Woman. My own early webpage was simply a static HTML page with various links. Later, I added funky disco-inspired animated GIFs, as was fashionable at the time. You can find my current main business website of CFB Scientific Translations LLC here, complete with responsive WordPress design in two languages and a WooCommerce shop.

In 2017, I was unexpectedly promoted from Ethics Chair to Webmaster on the Board of Directors of the Northern California Translators Association. As such, I am not only responsible for maintaining NCTA’s main website as well as NCTA’s online journal, Translorial, but also for administering the entire membership database including profile search functionality as well as events and event RSVPs and tickets. I am responsible for the current redesign of the NCTA website as well, including a separate member area behind a paywall, although the primary color scheme was developed by an earlier Board of Directors. In the role of NCTA Webmaster, I have learned more about the intricacies of WordPress, its plugins, PHP, CSS, SQL etc. than any sane translator should know.

Since 2021, I am the webmaster of the Science and Technology Division of the American Translators Association. Further, from 2021 to 2022 I was a member of the Steering Committee of CoPTIC America and the coalition’s webmaster, before the advocacy organization found its successful conclusion.

As part of my translation services, I have localized websites and software interfaces, including mobile apps. My own business website is bilingual in English and German. I am therefore intimately familiar with WPML and Polylang, the two most popular multilingual plugins for WordPress. My experience in localization includes software and app GUIs for a variety of clients in the high-tech industry, from Silicon Valley start-ups to Fortune 500 corporations.

In short, your website is in good hands. Although a physicist by training and a translator by trade, I know my way around multilingual websites and WordPress.

But enough about me, I’m sure you are more interested in my handsome Border Collie/Cattle Dog assistant Winnie. When Winnie is not busy winning ribbons at AKC agility events, he ensures the safety and security of CFB Scientific Translations LLC’s headquarters. Furthermore, he is responsible for shredding sensitive documents into microscopic pieces in accordance with applicable privacy regulations. His full AKC name is Erwin Spock Berger: Erwin after the great Nobel-prize winning physicist from Austria who had a thing about cats, and Spock after the character with the poignant ears from Star Trek.
